Halliburton Surname

The Halliburton name is Scottish in origin. The earliest known Halliburton ancestor was a man named Tructe the Saxon. He was an Englishman who came to Scotland during the rein of King Malcolm III (1058-1093). Eventually, his descendants adopted the use of what is now the Halliburton surname. The surname was derived from the name of the family estate, which was originally called Burton. The name Burton was derived from Norse words bur (storehouse) and dun (fort or castle). Eventually, a chapel was built on the estate and the word Haly (holy) was added to the name of the estate and the family surname.

The Halliburton line was based for hundreds of years in Berwickshire in southeast Scotland, near the border with England. Although we have yet to find any proof which directly connects our American family to their Scottish ancestors, our presumed ancestor George Haliburton lived in the village of Dryburgh in 1625.

1st Generation:

David Halliburton was born circa 1727 in Scotland 1. He died in 1767 in Orange Co., North Carolina 1.

We do not know the identities of David's parents. All we know is that David had at least two brothers - Thomas and William - who came to America with him in about 1746. The surviving story is that they were forced to flee their homeland in Scotland because of their adherence Prince Charles (the "Young Pretender) and their involvement in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. The 1959 Genealogical History of the Halliburton Family indicates that the brothers were descendants of George Halliburton (son of John Haliburton and Barbara Bruce) who was a minor in 1625. The inference that we are descended from George Haliburton is based on a letter written in 1899 by a descendant, Walter S. Merriman. The letter actually indicates that we descend from John and Barbara Halliburton, rather than through any particular child. Since we only yet know of a son named George, it is assumed he is our ancestor - but there could have been other children. The only other information in the book is that the name of the brothers' father may have been Thomas.

In the year 1746, David came to the American colonies, possibly as a student. He immediately came to Virginia and settled on a farm in Mecklenburg County. It was there, circa 1752, that he married Amey Humphreys. Together they had 6 children: David (see next generation), John, Charles, William, Thomas, and Margaret.

In about 1760, David moved his family to Orange County, North Carolina. David died there sometime in the year 1767 (he wrote his will on January 3, 1767 and it was proved in court in August 1767). Afterwards, David's widow remarried to James Jones.

David married Amey Humphreys in about 1752 in Virginia 1. She was born circa 1735 in Virginia and died about 1790 in Caswell Co., North Carolina 1.
Probable Father: John Humphreys
Probable Mother: Mary White
They had the following children:
1 David Halliburton
2 John Halliburton was born circa 1755 in Mecklenburg Co., Virginia 1. He died in September 1843 1.
3 Charles Halliburton was born circa 1758 in Mecklenburg Co., Virginia 1. He died in 1797 1.
4 William Halliburton was born in 1760 in Mecklenburg Co., Virginia 1. He died on June 25, 1847 1.
5 Thomas Halliburton was born in 1763 in Orange Co., North Carolina 1. He died in June 1843 1.

In about 1760, he moved with his family to Orange County, North Carolina and was raised there. After his father's death in 1767, he inherited half of his land in that county. During that time and the 1770's, he also lived in Caswell County, North Carolina. It was in about 1773, that David was married to Lucy Reynolds. During the American Revolution, David served under General Greene in the South Carolina campaigns and was at the Battle of Yorktown. During the war he sold his lands in Orange County and afterwards moved with his family to Wake County, North Carolina.

Together, David and Lucy had 13 children: John, Martin (see next generation), William, David, Nancy, Samuel, Ambrose, Mary, Margaret, Amy, Thomas, Lucetta and Gilly. David lived with his family in Wake County, NC, until 1806, when he moved out west and settled in Humphreys County, Tennessee. He lived there from 1806 until 1834, at which time he moved to Henderson County, Tennessee, then after his wife Lucy died there in 1835, he seems to have immediately moved to Gibson County, Tennessee. In about 1842, David moved to De Soto County, Mississippi, where he died on January 13, 1843, at the age of 89. It is said that David possessed a deep Scottish brogue and was supposed to have been a very kind man. Aside from farming, he also served as a Justice of the Peace and High Sheriff in Humphreys County, Tennessee. He was buried in the Halliburton Cemetery, De Soto County, Mississippi.

While living in Person County, he met and married a local girl on January 20, 1803, by the name of Frances Turner. After the marriage, the couple moved to Wake County, North Carolina, but only lived there for one year. In 1804, Martin moved with his wife and child to Tennessee, where they settled on Yellow Creek in Dickson County.

Together, Martin and Frances had 18 children: Reuben, William, Esther, Peggy, Samuel, Eliza, Nancy, Joseph, Chrissie, Simeon, George (see next generation), Lemuel, Martin, Lindley, Frances, John, Lucy and David. Sadly seven of those children died in infancy or childhood. Martin was very successful in Dickson County, Tennessee, where he had a large plantation. He also taught school in Dickson County. While living there, he served in the War of 1812. He was a sergeant in the company of Captain Joseph Williams, he participated in the sieges of Pensacola, Florida, and at New Orleans. He enlisted in 1814 and was discharged in 1815. Martin was also a land surveyor, was a juror, and a member of the Grant Jury of the Circuit Court.

In 1852, Martin moved to Randolph County, Missouri, where he and his wife settled near the town of Jacksonville. Martin was a staunch member of the Democratic political party and also an ardent member of the Baptist church. Martin died on February 9, 1860 in Randolph County, Missouri. George Coffee Halliburton was born on February 20, 1816 in Dickson County, Tennessee 1,2. He died on May 1, 1878 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 1,2,10. He is buried in the Sango Cemetery, Montgomery Co., Tennessee.

Father: Martin Halliburton
Mother: Frances Turner

George spent his youth on the family estate off of the Yellow Creek in Dickson County, Tennessee. At the age of 20, George enlisted to serve in the Seminole Indian War in Captain Tatum's Regiment. His term of service lasted from 1836 to 1837, being mustered out at New Orleans. At about that time, George moved to Montgomery County, Tennessee, where his brother William was living. In 1839, he made a trip with Edward Rogers (who married his sister Lucy the following year) from Clarksville, Tennessee, to New Orleans, Louisiana. After returning to Montgomery County, George purchased 100 acres of land from his brother William. Additionally, George received approximately 200 acres of bounty land for his service in the Indian war. In 1840, George was most likely enumerated in the household of his brother William.

In December 1840, George married Mary Grant, the daughter of a local plantation owner. In that same year, George enlarged the log cabin built during the 1790s that was on the land that he purchased. Eventually, George's brother William moved on to Missouri, but his sisters Nancy and Chrissie moved to Montgomery County with their families. George developed quite a large plantation during his lifetime and was financially successful. George is also reputed to have been responsible for the establishment of the small community of Sango, east of Clarksville. Aside from being a plantation owner, he also owned and operated a general store next to his home. This store and also some land he donated for the Sango Cemetery as well as the Presbyterian Church became the "center" of Sango. One story proposes that the name "Sango" derives from one of the products that he sold in his general store: ginseng root. It was supposed to be the place where you "go to get your gin-SANG." George was still operating his general store at the time of his death in 1878. Afterwards, the store was taken over by his nephew Samuel Nichols. In George's lifetime the community was generally called "Halliburton's Crossroads". In 1881, the community was renamed Sango by his successor, Samuel Nichols.

George's parents moved to Missouri in 1852. In 1860, after the death of his father, George hosted his mother on a visit to his home. In 1867, after his mother died, George and his wife planned a visit to Missouri with his sister Nancy. It is not known if they made the trip. Although George and his family were wealthy, they did not escape the ravages of horrible disease. In the spring of 1870, both his wife Mary and unmarried daughter Mary died from consumption (tuberculosis). In 1871, George remarried to a widow named Sylvester Wall. Then in May of 1878, George died from jaundice, possibly related to the the Yellow Fever Epidemic of that summer that ravaged the country. Later that summer, four of his grandchildren died within a week of each other from a diptheria epidemic. George's widow continued to live on the Halliburton estate at Sango for the rest of her life. In 1895, she owned 100 acres.

George married first to Mary Grant on December 17, 1840 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 1.

Four of David's children died within a week of each other during the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1878. Only one of their children, Annie, survived to adulthood.

He married Annie B. Smith on November 18, 1874 in Perry Co., Tennessee 13. She died on July 12, 1883 near Beardstown in Perry County, Tennessee 15.
They had two known children:
Blanch Halliburton (1880-1880)
unknown Halliburton (1883-???)
In 1874, Calvin was operating a "cheap cash store" at "Halliburton's Cross Roads" in rural Montgomery County, Tennessee. This may have been the same store that his father began operating at what became the community of Sango. In 1880, Calvin's occupation was listed as merchant, and was probably still operating the same store. When Calvin's wife died in 1883, her death notice indicated that she had a child two or three days earlier. It is not known what happened to the child, but assumed he or she died soon after.
6 Allen Halliburton was born circa 1852 5 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee. He died on April 22, 1886 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 14. He is buried in the Nicholson Cemetery, Montgomery Co., Tennessee.
He married Isadora Nicholson on December 22, 1875 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 6. (She was born on June 3, 1856 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 6 and died on October 10, 1884 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 6. She is buried in the Nicholson Cemetery, Montgomery Co., Tennessee.)
They had the following children:
Robert Craig Halliburton (1877-1956)
md. Susie Lemmie Anderson
Mary Alice Halliburton (1881-1952)
md. James Thomas Elliott
Allen was a farmer and lived somewhere in the vicinty of Sango, in Montgomery County, Tennessee. His wife died in 1884, leaving him with two young children. Allen suffered and died from consumption (tuberculosis) - the same disease that killed his mother and his two sisters. Allen wrote his will on March 16, 1886 and it was proven in court on May 3, 1886. In his will he nominated his brother Samuel as his executor and left his entire estate to his two children. Since his children were just minors when he died (ages 4 and 8), he directed that suitable homes be found for them other than with their maternal grandfather Josiah Nicholson, who Allen did not want to raise them. His daughter Mary was directed to be raised by the family of Joe Adams.
7 Samuel Turner Halliburton was born on October 8, 1858 1 or October 16, 1859 2 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee. He died on July 4, 1901 1 or July 24, 1901 2 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee. He is buried in the Sango Cemetery, Montgomery Co., Tennessee.
He married Margaret Geraldine Rudolph on February 13, 1890 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 6. (She was born on June 4, 1860 in Tennessee 2 and died on December 10, 1953 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 2. She is buried in the Sango Cemetery, Montgomery Co., Tennessee.)
They had the following children:
Calvin Troy Halliburton (1890-1876)
md. Louise Edmondson
Josephine Vesta Halliburton (1893-1991)
md. James Newton Paschall
Margie Geraldine Halliburton (1895-1993)
md. William Emmet Cocke
After the death of his father in 1878, Samuel continued to live with his stepmother in their home at Sango. Eventually, he took over his father's general store and also operated the family farm. Aside from this, Samuel was also an artist, furniture maker and photographer. In 1895, he owned 207 acres at Sango. Samuel was postmaster for Sango from 1883 to 1892 and then from 1893 to his death in 1901.
George married second Sylvester E. Adkins in 1871 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 6. She was born on November 16, 1832 1 or November 16, 1836 2 in Tennessee. She died on September 7, 1916 1,2 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee. She is buried in the Sango Cemetery, Montgomery Co., Tennessee.
Her name may have originally been Sylvestra (or something to that effect) but was always listed with the male version of the name. Her exact origin is not known, as she is listed variously with birthplace in Tennessee, Mississippi or Louisiana. She was orphaned as a child and in 1850 was living with her sister Elizabeth Atkins Lemmons. On March 14, 1852 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee, she married James H. Wall who was a carpenter and also a Justice of the Peace. He died sometime between 1861-1870. She had no children by either of her marriages. After her brief marriage to George Halliburton, she continued to run the family estate at Sango, Tennessee. In 1895, she owned 100 acre there.

5th Generation:

Elizabeth Grant Halliburton was born on January 5, 1842 in Montgomery County, Tennessee 1,2. She died on January 10, 1875 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 2,8. She is buried in the Sango Cemetery, Montgomery Co., Tennessee.

Father: George Coffee Halliburton
Mother: Mary Grant

Elizabeth was probably named after her mother's sister Elizabeth Grant Northington who had died in 1840 at the age of 20. She went by the pet name "Bettie." Elizabeth appears to have spent the entirety of her life in Montgomery County, Tennessee. She was born and raised on a plantation at what became the community of Sango. (The house where she was raised, at 266 Sango Drive, is still standing.) In 1859, at the age of 17, Elizabeth was married to Hugh Current, a young man from North Carolina. They began living on a farm also in the Sango community. In 1860, Hugh and Elizabeth owned one slave. On one list Elizabeth is listed as a member of the McDow congregation of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Other members included her mother, sister Mary, and brother Allen. In about 1873 or 1874, Elizabeth moved with her family to the city of Clarksville, where her husband opened and operated a chair-making business.

Elizabeth had eight children, yet she sadly buried two of them in her lifetime. Although her family was wealthy, they did not escape illness and early death. In 1870, both her mother and sister died from consumption. Elizabeth also had consumption (tuberculosis), which claimed her life in 1875, just 5 days after her 33rd birthday. Elizabeth "had a sweet disposition. She was an obedient child, a devoted wife and mother and beloved by all who knew her" 8. Her husband remarried soon after to a widow named Margaret Peterson, who helped to raise Elizabeth's children.

Elizabeth married Hugh Andrew Current on March 31, 1859 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 1,3,7,12.
