Juhl Surname

The Juhl surname is Danish in origin.

1st Generation:

Hans Juhl was born circa 1650 in Denmark.

Based on Danish patronymic name customs, we know that his name was Hans and his wife's name was probably Karen or Bodil. We know that their son Nis lived in Oster Logum Parish in Abenra and later in Moltrup Parish in Haderslev. Based on this, an educated guess is that they were the same couple as Hans Matzen Juhl and Karen Nisdatter who had other documented children with connections to both Oster Logum and Moltrup: Gunder, who was born in 1700 in Oster Logum, married Nis Iversen, and later died in Moltrup; and Kirsten, who was born in 1706 in Oster Logum, married Peder Hansen, and also died in Moltrup.
He married Karen?.

They had at least one child:

Nis married Elsabe Petersdatter on October 29, 1719 in Oster Logum, Åbenrå, Denmark. She was born circa 1694 in Denmark. She died on November 1, 1742 in Moltrup, Haderslev, Denmark.

Peter was a farmer. He was born and raised in the village of Moltrup, where he was confirmed in 1748, at the age of 16. He was probably the Peder Nissen of Moltrup who was a godfather to the baptism of his niece Dorthea Christansdatter in 1756. He also was probably the Peder Nissen of nearby Rovstrup who in 1758 was the godfather to his nephew Hans Hansen. Sometime before 1761, he moved to the village of Stokkerhoved in Gammel Haderslev Parish, where he remained. He had 14 children, 7 of which survived to adulthood.

Mother: Karen Hansdatter

Anna Kirstine was baptized on July 20, 1749 in Astrup Parish. Her date of birth is unknown, but her age as listed on her death record (28 years minus 1 month and 2 days) might calculate to a birth date of on our about July 7, 1749. That is realistic, and suggests that she was baptized at 13 days old and was married on her 20th birthday.

Sara Petersdatter Juhl was born on October 24, 1771 in Stokkerhoved, Gammel Haderslev, Haderslev, Denmark. She died on April 29, 1824 in Over-Jerstal, Vedsted, Haderslev, Denmark.

Father: Peter Nissen Juhl
Mother: Anna Kirstine Jensdatter

Sara possibly used the pet name "Sarine" during her life (Sarine was one of her granddaughter's middle names). Sara was named after her father's first wife, Sara Hansdatter, who died from childbirth in 1767. Sara's father had the surname Juhl, yet she never used that name herself. Throughout her life, she used the patronymic name Petersdatter which was sometimes standardized as Petersen or Peters. She sometimes also used the name Hansen, which was used to indicate her husband's first name. It was only on her daughter's 1889 death record that Sara's maiden name was listed as Juhl.

Sara was born and raised in the village of Stokkerhoved. Her mother died in her childhood and her father remarried two more times. After her mother's death, she may have spent some time living in Moltrup Parish, where most of her father's relatives lived and where her brother died in 1785 (and where her future husband was from).

After her marriage, Sara and her husband settled briefly in the village of Jernhyt in Hammelev Parish, where they lived in 1794 and 1797. By 1800, they moved to the village of Over-Jerstal in Vedsted Parish, where they remained until their deaths.

She married Hans Anthonisen Klinge on July 26, 1794 in Gammel Haderslev, Haderslev, Denmark.
