Möller Surname

The Möller surname (written as "Moeller" in English script) is German in origin. The name essentially means "miller." The earliest of this family were living near the village of Kembs in Schleswig-Holstein.

1st Generation:

Claus Möller was born circa 1691 in Germany. He died on August 26, 1776 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.

When Claus married in 1722, his marriage record seems to indicate that he was a resident of the village of Darry in Lütjenburg Parish. If he was from Lütjenburg Parish, then no record would document his birth or his parents because that parish's records don't survive before 1701. After his marriage, Claus settled with his wife in the village of Kembs, where he remained until his death. He was described as a Käthner "cottager", which was a term for a farm laborer who lived in a cottage but owned little or no land.
Clas married Anna "Leneke" Magdalena Voss on November 13, 1722 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. She was born circa 1692 in Germany. She died sometime between 1744 and 1776, in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

She usually went by the name "Leneke", a diminutive version of her middle name. When she married in 1722, she was described as a resident of the village of Kembs. Although we know she died sometime between 1744 and 1776, she most likely died between 1745 and 1763, because that is the gap where burial records do not survive from their parish.
They had the following child:
1 Anna Dorothea Möller was born in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and baptized on May 8, 1722 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. She died on December 21, 1785 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
She married first Hinrich Möller on November 9, 1742 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He died sometime between 1752 and 1754, probably in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
They had children:
Andreas Johann Christian Möller (1743-died young)
Friedrich Gottfried (1745-1782)
md. Elisabeth Horn
Detlev Friedrich Möller (1747-1813)
md. Catharina Dorothea Prehm
Elisabeth Lucia Möller (1752-died young)
She married second to Jochim Russert sometime between 1752 and 1754. He was born circa 1721 and died on June 12, 1800 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
They had children:
Christopher Hinrich Russert (c. 1754-1805)
md. Anna Margaretha Lut
Elisabeth Lucia Russert (c. 1757-1828)
Md. Claus Hinrich Kruse
Lucia Hinrietta Russert (1759-died young)
Dorothea Magdalena Russert (1761-1825)
md. Johann Hinrich Speth
Lucia Catharina Russert (1764-1768)

Anna Dorothea spent most of her life in the village of Kembs, Germany. It's a guess though that she might have lived elsewhere during the 1750s; as neither her second marriage (c. 1753) or the births of two of her children (c. 1754 and c. 1757) were entered in Lütjenburg Parish.

2 Hinrich Möller was born in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and baptized on August 22, 1724 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He was died in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and was buried on August 24, 1728 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
3 Elisabeth Möller was born in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and baptized on August 28, 1729 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. She died on March 15, 1793 in Behrensdorf, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
She married Hinrich Wulf in about 1755 Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He was born circa 1716 and died on January 22, 1790 in Behrensdorf, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
They had children:
Lucia Margaretha Wulf (1764-1768)
Johann Detlev Hinrich Wulf (1767-died young)
Friedrich Heinrich Wulf (1769-1834)
md. Elisabeth Lucia Voss
Christopher Friedrich Wulf (1772-1806)
md. Charlotta Dorothea Voss
Anna Margaretha Wulf (???-)
md. Jochem Christian Voss
others died young?

Elisabeth and her husband were probably married in November 1755. Their marriage banns were entered on October 20, 1755 (the actual marriage records for that time don't survive, but marriages were usually performed 3-4 weeks after the banns). There are no known children documented between 1755 and 1764, suggesting that there could have been others that died young and/or that they lived somewhere else within the first 9 years of marriage. By 1764, they were documented in the village of Behrensdorf and Elisabeth and Hinrich remained there until their deaths.

4 Lucia Margarethe Möller was born in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and baptized on September 14, 1732 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. She died on July 6, 1797 in Behrensdorf, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
She married first Hinrich Voss on October 7, 1763 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He was born in about 1731 and died on December 3, 1774 in Behrensdorf, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
They had two children:
Elisabeth Lucia Hinriette Voss (1764-1840)
md. Hinrich Gottfried Voss
Lucia Margarethe Charlotte Voss (1771-1810)
md. Johann Hinrich Stehr
She married second Claus Hinrich Kruse on September 18, 1778 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He was born circa 1731 and died on November 27, 1796 in Behrensdorf, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1
They had no children.
5 Christian Gottfried Möller
6 Friedrich Christian Möller was born in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and baptized on May 4, 1738 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He died on September 4, 1793 in Helmstorf, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
He married first Dorothea Möller. She was born circa 1728 and died on November 20, 1773 in Neverstorf, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
They had two children:
Claus Friederich Möller (1767-)
Cicilia Elisabeth Möller
He married second Anna Margaretha Kruse, widow of Hinrich Gottfried Stehr, on May 5, 1775 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1
They had one child:
Detlef Hinrich Möller

Friederich was a gardner. In 1773 and 1775, they were living at Neverstorf (estate in Lütjenburg Parish) and in 1793 were at Helmstorf (a nearby estate also in Lütjenburg Parish). My guess is that Friedrich possibly lived in a different parish at some point in his adulthood (his first marriage and two of his children's baptism records were not included in Lütjenburg Parish records).

7 Johann Casper Möller was born in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and baptized on May 7, 1744 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He died on December 3, 1805 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
He married Elisabeth Lucia Möller on October 25, 1776 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. She was born circa 1747 and died on June 15, 1803 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
They had children:
Sophia Carolina Möller (1777-1851)
md. Hinrich Christoph Voss
Lucia Elisabeth Möller (1779-1784)
Friederica Charlotta Elisabeth Möller (1782-1784)
Hinrich Hans Möller (1785-1787)
Hinrich Christoph Möller (1788-1829)
md. Friederika Catharina Speth

2nd Generation:

Christian Gottfried Möller was born in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and baptized on October 23, 1735 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He died on December 10, 1819 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.

Father: Claus Möller
Mother: Anna "Leneke" Magdalena Voss

Christian apparently resided in the village of Kembs for his entire life. In September 1764, he had an illegitimate daughter with Dorothea Luth. They were married 4 years later. In early adulthood, Christian was described as a "knecht" (farmhand) and in later adulthood he was described as a "käthner" (cottager, or farmer who lived in a cottage and owned either little or no land). He was buried on December 13, 1819. Christian's death record indicated he was 97 years old, which suggests he was born in about 1722. However this is unlikely because he was baptized in 1735; and people at that time/church were consistently baptized as young infants.
Christian married Margreth Dorothea Luths on November 18, 1768 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. She was born in Stöfs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and baptized on December 22, 1734 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. She died on February 1, 1784 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.

Father: Christopher "Stoffer" Luths
Mother: Catharina "Trin" Voss
She went by her middle name, Dorothea.

3rd Generation:

Christopher Hinrich Möller was born on June 9, 1769 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He died on November 1, 1839 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.

Father: Christian Gottfried Möller
Mother: Margreth Dorothea Luths

In 1803, he was described as a käthner (cottager), which means he was a farmer who owned a house and small amount of land. In 1835, he described as a Tagelöhner (day laborer). He resided in the village of Kembs for his entire life.
Christopher married Elisabeth Margaretha Wulf was born on November 7, 1797 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. She was born on November 23, 1775 in Behrensdorf, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. She died on November 20, 1835 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.

Father: Hans Hinrich Wulf
Mother: Elisabeth Voss
She went by her first name, Elisabeth. She and her family were from the village of Behrensdorf in Lütjenburg Parish. On most records, Elisabeth is listed with her maiden name Wulf. However, on a few of her children's records, she is listed with the last name Horn; which makes sense because Horn was her stepfather's name (her father died in her childhood and her mother remarried to Friedrich Horn). However in some other records, her last name was listed as Voss; the rationale for that name is unknown, but it was her mother's maiden name.
They had children:
1 Friedericka Elisabeth Sophia Möller
2 Hinrich Christoph Möller was born on April 10, 1800 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He died on November 15, 1872 in Neverstorf, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.

Catharine Elisabeth Möller (1843-)
md. Claus Rudiger
Louise Catharine Möller (1844-)
md. Claus Görs

Throughout his adulthood, he lived in Kembs and Behrensdorf; neighboring villages in Lütjenburg Parish. All of Hinrich's children moved away; three of them moved to Denmark, and the other two moved to different cities in northern Germany. Strangely, parish registers indicate that his youngest child Louise Catharina (born in 1844) was both his child, and also the child of his sister-in-law (Christiana Adolphine Möller, widow of his brother Friedrich, by her second husband, Christian Ludwig Möller).

3 Friedrich Christian Möller was born on January 19, 1802 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He died on February 6, 1836 in Matzwitz, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.

Margarethe Wilhelmine Möller (1836-1872)
md. Christopher Hinrich Wulf

In 1834 and 1835, Friederich was working as a farmhand in Todendorf in neighboring Giekau Parish. By the following year, 1836, he was living in Matzwitz in Lütjenburg Parish, where he died (just 11 days after his daughter was born). After his death, his widow Christina was married to Christian Ludwig Möller, probably a distant cousin.

7 Johann Detlef Möller was born on October 13, 1810 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He died after 1839.

Johann was confirmed in Lütjenburg in 1826, and details of his life after that are unknown. He was described as surviving his father in 1839, but it is unknown where he was living. It is assumed that he had moved away, as there is no evidence of any marriage or burial record for him in Lütjenburg Parish.

8 Christian Hinrich Möller was born on July 13, 1813 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He died on July 15, 1847 in Behrensdorf, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
He married Friederika Lucia Luth on November 25, 1840 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. She was born in about 1815 and died on December 1, 1884 in Behrensdorf, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
They had children:
Catharina Elisabeth Möller (1843-)

Christiana Elisabeth Möller (1845-)

In 1835, he was living in Kembs and working as a farm laborer/servant. Sometime between 1835-1840, he moved to the neighboring village of Behrensdorf and remained there until his death. After his death, his widow Friederika remarried to August Hinrich Lau. She had two daughters by her second marriage.

Conrad Wilhelm Schuldt (1851-1934)
md. Maria "Lena" Carolina Wulfine Lau
Carolina Maria Schuld (1853-)
md. Heinrich Friedrich Johannes Evers
When Luise married Hinrich Schulz in 1848, he was a widower. His first wife had recently died and he had 4 sons from that first marriage. Hinrich was a "forest warden". During their marriage they lived in Behrensdorf and Stöfs in Lutjenburg Parish, and also at Eitz in Hansühn Parish in the neighboring Ostholstein District.

4th Generation:

Friederika Elisabeth Sophia Möller was born on November 19, 1798 in Kembs, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein 1. She died on December 1, 1874 in Darry, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.

Father: Christopher Hinrich Möller
Mother: Elisabeth Margaretha Wulf

Friederika spent the first part of her life in the village of Kembs, Germany. In 1819, she was living in the nearby village of Darry, Germany. There, she married Hans Lilienthal, who lived there. They were married until his death in 1835. She remarried in 1838 and then outlived her second husband by almost 20 years. Friederika remained in Darry for the duration of her life, even though most of her children had moved away from the area.

Although she was baptized with the names "Friederika Elisabeth", she also appeared with the name Sophia on several records - presumably she adopted that middle name in her adulthood.

Friederica married first Hans Detlev Lilienthal on November 13, 1819 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.

For information on their children, see his page.
Friederica married second Friedrich Christian Rosenthal on August 19, 1838 in Lütjenburg, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He was born circa 1813 in Ronfeldholz, Ploen, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 3. He died on January 31, 1856 in Darry, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.

Friedrich was a bricklayer and stonemason.
They had the following children:
1 Friedrich Wilhelm Christian Rosenthal was born on August 27, 1839 in Darry, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He died on January 9, 1841 in Darry, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
2 stillborn son Rosenthal was stillborn on October 23, 1841 in Darry, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1.
3 Johannes Ernst Rosenthal was born on January 26, 1844 in Darry, Plön, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany 1. He died in 1903 in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
He married Sophia Olsdotter on May 16, 1875 in Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark. She died in 1896 in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.
They had at least these children:
Anton Rufus Rosenthal (1873-1937)
md. Marie Christine Matthilde Rasmussen
Johanne Ernstine Sofie Rosenthal (1876-)
Eduard Bernhard Rosenthal (1886-)
md. Elisabeth Emma Auguste Michaelsen
Johannes was a stonemason like his father and half-brother Carl Lilienthal. Sometime before 1870, he moved to Copenhagen, Denmark, where he lived for at least 6 years. Then sometime between 1876 and 1886, he moved to Kiel, Germany (a larger city near where he had grown up), and remained there until his death.
