Whitlock Surname

The Whitlock surname is English in origin. The meaning of the name and its exact origin within in England is as yet unknown by me.
1st Generation:

James? Whitlock was born in Virginia. He died in or before 1783, probably in Henrico Co., Virginia.

There is not much known about the life of this Whitlock. Various family trees describe him as being married first to a Sarah and second to Mary Smith. This is probably because of a July 1765 deed, which describes a James Whitlock and his wife Sarah Whitlock of Henrico County, Virginia. It is then an assumption that the same James Whitlock's widow Mary appeared in Henrico County tax lists from 1783 and 1785 before writing her will in 1786. However there is no evidence that they were the same person - and in fact I'm not aware of any records that actually provide the first name of Mary Whitlock's husband. When Mary wrote her will in 1786, she described her four children (John, Elizabeth, Sarah and Thomas) and did not describe any of them as stepchildren.

This Whitlock was likely descended from other Whitlocks that had been in Virginia since the 1600s, but the connection is unknown. Many family trees (including a previous version of this website) describe him as the son of James Whitlock and Agness Christmas. However that has been disproven, their son named James Whitlock was definitely someone else (married Sylvia Jones and moved to North Carolina).

James married Mary Smith circa 1760s in Virginia. She was born circa 1740s in Virginia. She died before July 3, 1786 in Henrico Co., Virginia.

Mary Whitlock appeared on personal property tax lists in Henrico County, Virginia between 1783 and 1785. She wrote her will on January 14, 1786. She described herself as Mary Whitlock of Henrico County, Virginia. She described her children as John Whitlock, Elizabeth Worner (or Warner), Sarah Whitlock, and Thomas Whitlock. She appointed Samuel Gathright Sr. and William Gathright Sr. as executors of her will. It was proven on July 3, 1786.

Mary's maiden name is unknown. But it is assumed to be Smith, because in a 1791 deed, Thomas Whitlock of Henrico and Buckingham Co., VA (1769-1848) was described as a grandson of Humphrey Smith. An Elizabeth Smith was also one of the witnesses to her will.

They had four known children:
1 John Whitlock was born on July 11 (possibly in 1763) in Henrico Co., Virginia 14. He died on August 27, 1845 in Henrico Co., Virginia.
She married Sarah Warriner* circa 1780s. She was born during the 1760s in Henrico Co., Virginia and died sometime between 1830 and 1840 in Henrico Co., Virginia.
They had three children:
John Whitlock (c. 1790-1860)
md. Frances Woodfin
Charles Whitlock (c. 1792-1853)
md. Mary Woodfin
Frances Whitlock (c. 1796-1865)
md. William Spencer (widower of her first cousin Jane Whitlock, see below)

According to his 1834 pension application, John was born on July 11th in Henrico County, Virginia (but the year is missing from the record - although most family trees have it listed as 1763). He resided in Henrico County for the duration of his life. He served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, for which he later received a pension in his old age. John was married to Sarah, probably in the late 1780s. They had three known children. John wrote his will on June 11, 1845, in which he described his children Charles Whitlock, John Whitlock and Frances Spencer. His will was proven on September 1, 1845.

*John's wife was described as "Sarah" in contemporary records, but those records don't include her maiden name. Most online family trees provide her name as Sarah Edwards; which derives from a documented marriage between a John Whitlock and Sarah Edwards in 1774 in Goochland County, Virginia. However that was a different couple. In reality, John's wife was probably Sarah Warriner, daughter of John Warriner of Henrico Co., Virginia. When John Warriner wrote his will in February 1799, he described one of his daughters as Sarah Whitlock. Note that John Warriner's son David Warriner was also probably married to John Whitlock's sister Elizabeth Whitlock (see below). Another child of John Warriner, Samuel Warriner, was also one of the people that submitted an affidavit in 1834 in support John Whitlock's pension application. And in addition, after John's mother Mary Whitlock died in 1786, John Warriner was one of the securities to the bond when John Whitlock was appointed as administrator of the estate.

2 Elizabeth Whitlock was born circa 1760s in Henrico Co., Virginia. She died sometime between 1831 and 1840 in Buckingham Co., Virginia.
She married David Warriner before 1786, probably in Henrico Co., Virginia. He was born in Henrico Co., Virginia and died in 1818 or 1819 in Buckingham Co., Virginia.
They had the following children:
William Warinner (c. 1786-1862)
md. Martha
William's wife is documented in contemporary records as "Martha", yet one source also lists her name as "Elizabeth Edwards". My guess is that she was his first cousin, Martha Edwards. They had three children: William Madison, John W., and Ann Augusta. William probably married and began raising his children in Buckingham Co., Virginia. Sometime by 1824, he moved to Powhatan Co., Virginia. Then in 1859, they moved to Charles City Co., Virginia. William wrote his will there on December 2, 1861. His will was proven on November 20, 1862.
Mary "Polly" Warriner (c. 1790-1871)
Thomas Whitlock Warriner (1792-1854)
md. Sarah D. Ladd
In 1818, Thomas was issued a marriage bond in neighboring Prince Edward County, Virginia. He was then documented in Buckingham County, Virginia between 1820 and 1825. In 1825, he moved to Rockingham Co., North Carolina - where he remained.
Agnes Warriner (c. 1795-1874)
Reuben W. Warriner (c. 1800-1868)
David Warriner
James WarrinerJames Warriner appeared on tax lists in Buckingham County, Virginia between 1825 and 1837, and then disappears from records in that county. An educated guess is that he was the same person as James Warner who married Mary Ann Taylor and had three children (Elizabeth A. Warner, Mary Jane Warner and William David Warner) before his early death in about 1837. His widow remarried to William A. Taylor and moved to Lewis Co., Virginia (now West Virginia) during the 1840s.
Elizabeth Warriner

Elizabeth was described as "Elizabeth Worner" (or Warner) in her mother's 1786 will. Although her exact identify is unproven, she was most likely married to David Warriner of Buckingham County, Virginia (where Thomas Whitlock and Sarah Whitlock Radford also settled). David Warriner was born and raised in Henrico County, Virginia but had moved to Buckingham County, Virginia by 1785. In February 1799, he was described in his father's will as inheriting land in Buckingham County. David Warriner resided in Buckingham County continuously until his death in 1818 or 1819. Although his widow was named Elizabeth, proof of her last name is unknown. One source indicates that his wife was named Elizabeth Murphy 13, yet no explanation is listed there and that book is riddled with many errors. It's more likely that his wife was Elizabeth Whitlock (Note that David Warriner's sister Sarah married Elizabeth's brother John Whitlock. Also note the multiple uses of the middle name Whitlock among David's descendants. Also note the same migration path (Henrico County to Buckingham County) as other members of the Whitlock family.)

3 Sarah "Sallie" Whitlock was born circa 1767*, probably in Henrico Co., Virginia. She died sometime between 1820 and 1830 in Cumberland Co., Kentucky.
She married James Radford circa 1786 in Virginia. He was born in 1762 in Cumberland (now Powhatan) Co., Virginia and died in March 1836 in Cumberland Co., Kentucky.
They had the following children:
James Whitlock Radford (c. 1786-c. 1850)
md. Martha Petty
John Radford (c. 1788-aft. 1830)
Thomas Radford (c. 1789-1862)
md. Anna Maxey
Riley Radford (c. 1795-aft. 1850)
md. Catharine
William Layton Radford (1798-1875)
md. Jane R. Hicks
Raymond Radford (c. 1800-1862)
Millender G. Radford (c. 1801-c. 1870)
md. Permelia Freelove "Lovey" Parker
Luford Radford (c. 1809-1868)
at least three others

Sarah was described as Sarah Whitlock in her mother's will of January 1786, so she must have married to James Radford sometime after that. At the time, James Radford was living in Buckingham County, Virginia. James and Sarah lived together in Buckingham County, where they owned 125 acres and all of their children were born. In 1810, they sold their land in Virginia and moved west to Kentucky. They settled in Cumberland County, Kentucky; where they both remained until their deaths.

* Sarah is often listed with the birthdate October 25, 1766. However that is the documented date of birth for a different person: Sally Whitlock, daughter of John and Ann Whitlock, who was born in Goochland County, Virginia.

4 Thomas Whitlock

5th Generation:

Thomas Whitlock was born on February 5, 1769 5 probably in Henrico Co., Virginia. He died on October 2, 1848 in Green Co., Kentucky 5.

Father: James Whitlock
Mother: Mary Smith

Thomas was probably born and raised in Henrico County, Virginia. He was probably the "Thomas Whitlock orphan of James Whitlock decd." who was ordered to be "bound out" (as an apprentice) according to a February 1785 court order in Henrico County, Virginia. Then in June 1787, "Thomas Whitlock orphan of James Whitlock decd." was again ordered to be bound out to John Williamson, a carpenter. He was also likely the Thomas Whitlock described as a son of Mary Whitlock, when she wrote her will in Henrico County in January 1786. Sometime in his youth (between 1787 and 1790), he moved to Buckingham County, Virginia (where older siblings Elizabeth and Sarah had recently settled). Thomas was next found in January 1791, when he was already married to Rebecca Radford and described as a resident of Buckingham County, Virginia when he sold land in Henrico County that had been left to him by his grandfather Humphrey Smith.

Sometime prior to January 1791, Thomas had married Rebecca Radford from Buckingham County, Virginia (she was the sister of James Radford, who was already married to Thomas' sister Sarah). Thomas and his family resided in Buckingham County for the next 20 years. Then in 1812 or 1813, they moved out west to Green County, Kentucky. In December 1813, Thomas first purchased land in Green County, Kentucky. There, they settled along Greasy Creek just west of the community of Exie. Thomas remained there until his death. He wrote his will on February 15, 1847 in which he described his son James Whitlock, son Benjamin R. Whitlock, daughter Elizabeth Sandidge, grandson John T. Sandidge, son William R. Whitlock, "ancient friend and connection" Elizabeth Radford, children of daughter Jane Spencer, children of daughter Mary Cobbs, children of daughter Nancy Radford, daughter Rebecca Price, and son John Whitlock. His will was proven on October 16, 1848. On February 19, 1853, Thomas' heirs sold his land on Greasy Creek to John Bagby (John was the brother of Thomas' daughter-in-law Betsy Bagby Whitlock. He was also the stepson of his wife's niece Martha Saunders Bagby). Then one month later, John Bagby sold the land to Thomas' son James Whitlock (1803-1887) and James sold a portion of the land to Brice Edwards (husband of Thomas' granddaughter Sarah Cobb).

Thomas married Rebecca Radford circa 1790 in Buckingham Co., Virginia. She was born circa 1771, probably in Cumberland (now Powhatan) Co., Virginia. She died on September 1, 1844 in Exie, Green Co., Kentucky 5.

They had the following children:

5 Jane Whitlock was born circa 1791 in Buckingham Co., Virginia. She died sometime between 1819 and 1822 in Buckingham Co., Virginia.
She married William Spencer circa 1808 in Buckingham Co., Virginia. He was born sometime between 1770-1780 in Virginia and died circa 1849-1850 in Buckingham Co., Virginia.
They had the following children:
John R. Spencer (c. 1809-c. 1857)
md. Elizabeth H.
William Johnson Spencer (1812-1884)
md. Nancy Ann Wright
Martha Ann Spencer (c. 1815-c. 1868)
md. Thomas Robertson
Jane Rebecca Spencer (c. 1819-1886)
md. John Stinson

Most family histories provide her birthdate as approximately 1801 and indicate she married two times: to William Spencer and John Stinson - which is only partially correct.

Jane was actually the oldest child (or one of the oldest) and was married in Buckingham County, Virginia before her family moved west to Kentucky. When her father wrote his will in February 1847 it described "my daughter Jane Spencer's children". Then a March 1849 record about the estate described "Jane Spencer's heirs". Then in a February 1853 list of Thomas Whitlock's heirs included the following people who cannot be matched with any other descendants of Thomas Whitlock: Mary [Martha] A. Robinson [Robertson] and her husband Thomas Robinson, John Spencer, William Spencer, and Jane Stinson and her husband John Stinson. These four people are confirmed as children of William and Jane Spencer by the 1850 land tax list of Buckingham County, which describes recently deceased William Spencer's estate being distributed to his children including John R. Spencer, William J. Spencer, John Stinson and wife, and Thomas Robertson and wife. The same William Spencer had also 1) married Jane's first cousin Frances Whitlock; 2) recently purchased land from Jane's aunt Elizabeth Radford and 3) had also recently purchased land from the estate of Jane's grandfather John Radford.

Jane died sometime between approximately 1819 (when her daughter Jane was probably born) and February 1822 (when her husband remarried to her first cousin, Frances Whitlock). However she had probably died before 1820, as a woman of her age group is not included in her husband's household in the census of that year.

Note that there was two different William Spencers in Buckingham County at the same time period, they were both born during the 1770s, and both raised families with children of similar ages. Most online family trees incorrectly combine these two families together.

This William Spencer died in 1849 or 1850, and was married to Jane Whitlock and Frances Whitlock and his children included John R., William J., Martha A., and Jane R. (children of Jane); and Sarah and Frances Spencer (children of Frances). He lived on the Slate River in Buckingham County. He was often described as "Captain William Spencer", to differentiate him from the other William.

The other William Spencer died in 1847 or 1848, and was married Elizabeth Baker, and also raised a large family of children. He lived on Ripley Creek in Buckingham County.

2 Mary "Polly" B. Whitlock was born on May 20, 1793 in Buckingham Co., Virginia 5. She died on July 10, 1838 5 in Green Co., Kentucky.
She married first Hercules Garrett on December 25, 1816 in Green Co., Kentucky 5. He was born on July 7, 1792 in Buckingham Co., Virginia and died before September 16, 1822 in Green Co., Kentucky.

3 Rebecca Radford Whitlock was born on January 31, 1795 in Buckingham Co., Virginia 5. She died on January 31, 1855 in Moniteau Co., Missouri. She is buried in the Moreau Cemetery, Moniteau Co., Missouri.
She married Robert R. Price on October 15, 1816 in Green Co., Kentucky 5. He was born on August 16, 1788 in Virginia and died before August 16, 1865 in Cooper Co., Missouri.
They had the following children:
Thomas F. W. Price (c. 1819-1858)
md. Frances M. Campbell
Martha Ann Price (c. 1820-1840s)
md. Stephen Decatur Smiley
John Ashlock Price (1824-1893)
md. Frances Marian Kelly
Elizabeth Kendrick Price (1827-aft. 1880)
md. 1st Peter C. Latham
md. 2nd Amos Ashcraft
After their marriage in 1816, Robert and Rebecca lived for about 20 years in Green County, Kentucky. Sometime between 1837 and 1839, they moved out west to Missouri. They settled in the part of Cole County, Missouri that became Moniteau County, Missouri. Sometime during the 1860s, Robert apparently moved to adjacent Cooper County, Missouri, where he probably died (because his estate was administered in that county).

Records suggest that Robert's middle name was "Wright" but that he used the middle initial "R."

4 John Robert Whitlock
5 Nancy L. Whitlock was born on November 11, 1798 in Buckingham Co., Virginia 5. She died on August 19, 1840 5 in Christian Co., Kentucky.

Nancy and Johnson lived in Green County, Kentucky between 1820 and 1835. In December 1835, they sold their land in Green County and moved to Christian County, Kentucky, where other relatives were living. They both remained there until their deaths.
6 James Agee Whitlock was born on April 20, 1803 in Buckingham Co., Virginia 5. He died on February 25, 1887 5 in Green Co., Kentucky.
He married Elizabeth "Betsy" Jones Bagby on March 15, 1827 in Green Co., Kentucky 5. (She was born on March 31, 1809 in Virginia and died sometime between 1860 and 1870 in Green Co., Kentucky.)

After their marriage in 1827, James and his wife lived in Green County, Kentucky for about 10 years. Then sometime between 1837 and 1840, they moved to adjacent Adair County, Kentucky; where they lived for about about 10 years. In 1849 or 1850, they moved back to Green County, Kentucky. In March 1853, James purchased a portion of his father's estate on Greasy Creek, and remained there until his death.

7 Elizabeth Warner Whitlock was born on January 15, 1805 in Buckingham Co., Virginia 5. She died on June 28, 1881 5.
She married Christopher Sandidge on January 25, 1821 in Buckingham Co., Virginia 5. He was born on December 17, 1797 in Albemarle Co., Virginia and died on September 10, 1886 in Green Co., Kentucky.

md. Jordan Grove
9 Sophia Whitlock was born sometime between 1800 and 1810, in Buckingham Co., Virginia. She died sometime between 1842 and 1847, probably in Kentucky.
She married Thomas Radford on August 20, 1829 in Green Co., Kentucky 5. He was born on February 13, 1806 in Buckingham Co., Virginia and died on February 22, 1862 in Christian Co., Kentucky.
If they had any children, none of them survived.
After their marriage, they lived in Adair County, Kentucky (adjacent to Green County), where they were documented between 1830 and 1842. In August 1842, they sold their land in Adair County, and presumably moved away. Sophia had died before her father wrote his will in February 1847. In 1850, Thomas was living in Christian County, Kentucky (where most of his siblings were living); where he remarried and remained until his death.

6th Generation:

John Robert* Whitlock was born on March 13, 1797 in Buckingham Co., Virginia 3,4,5. He died on March 7, 1878 in Christian Co., Kentucky 3,4,5. He is buried in the Whitlock Cemetery, Christian Co., Kentucky.

Father: Thomas Whitlock
Mother: Rebecca Radford

John was born and raised in Buckingham County, Virginia. Multiple records indicate he moved to Green County, Kentucky in 1810 (when he would have been 12 or 13). However his parents did not move there until 1812 or 1813. Perhaps he initially went west to Kentucky with the family of his uncle Reuben Radford (who did move to Green County in 1810 or 1811). In 1816 (at age 19) he moved again, to Christian Co., Kentucky - where other relatives were living. He was there married on January 20, 1817 to Elizabeth Radford (his first cousin). They settled in southern Christian County and had 6 children: Adaline, William, John (see next generation), Elmira, James, Lucy and Rufus. In 1841 his wife Elizabeth died. He remarried on November 15, 1842 in Trigg Co., Kentucky to a widow named Sicily Bacon (another first cousin). By this second marriage he had 3 children: Benjamin, Sarah and Mary. She also brought to the marriage 2 step-children, William and Ann Fielding.

* Many family histories list his middle name as "Richard". I have not located any contemporary record with that middle name. My assumption is that other researchers had guessed his middle name was Richard because the name was often used in his mother's family. However it's more likely that his middle name was Robert, because his son John R. Whitlock Jr.'s was documented in multiple contemporary records as Robert. Although of it of course possible that they had different middle names. Another possibility of course is that his middle name was Radford (named after his maternal grandfather).

John was a farmer and also for a portion of his life he taught school during the winter months. In matters of religion John was a member of the Baptist church and was also a Captain in the Kentucky militia. John died at his home on March 7, 1878. He was buried beside his first wife Elizabeth in the Whitlock Cemetery (on their farm) in Christian Co., Kentucky.

Obituary, Weekly Leaf-Chronicle, Mar. 14, 1878, Pg. 3:
"DIED.
WHITLOCK - At his residence, near Longview, Christian county, Ky., March 7th, of pneumonia, Capt. Jno. R. Whitlock, in the eighty-first year of his age.
Capt. Whitlock was one of the first settlers of Christian county, Ky. Born in Buckingham county, Va., in 1797, he removed to Green county, Ky., in 1810, and to Christian county in 1816, where for sixty-two years, he has resided, an honor to the community in which he dwelt. During this long period no one ever knew aught against him. A man of the strictest integrity, hospitable, charitable in all things, his hand was ever ready to reach forth to those in trouble or affliction. His virtues innumerable, his faults, if any he possessed, were never known. An affectionate father and devoted husband, a man beloved by all, whom even little children loved and reverenced.
Capt. Whitlock had been for nearly fifty years a prominent and leading member of the Baptist Church. Northing could so deeply move the hearts of the community as the death of this greatly good man.
To his mourning and truly bereaved wife and family we tender our sympathy. May his spotless life be a beacon-light to guide others through the thorny and rugged paths of life's weary ways."

Obituary, Kentucky New Era [Hopkinsville, KY], Mar. 15, 1878, Pg. 3:
"OBITUARY.
Died of pneumonia, at his residence in Christian county, Ky., March 7th, 1878, Capt. JOHN R. WHITLOCK, in the 81st year of his age. He was born in Buckingham county, Virginia, March 13, 1797; moved to Green county, Kentucky, in 1810, and from there to Christian county in 1816; married and settled the place on which he resided at his death, having lived there more than sixty years. He spent a portion of his early life in teaching school, but was principally engaged in farming.
About the year 1833 he united himself with the Baptist church at Salem and filled the office of Deacon for more than forty years. He was an exemplary Christian, a leader in the church, punctual in attendance, noted for his liberality in its support and every charitably object connected with it, in all of which he took the deepest interest. He was loved and honored by all who knew him. A shining light, just such as God would like his child to be. It is needless to say nothing was wanting in other relations of life with so true and pure a Christian gentleman. A husband, kind, affectionate, and faithful; as a father, devoted, liberal and indulgent; as a citizen, an ornament to society, cultivated, public spirited, frank and just in all his dealings, an arbitrator and peace-maker of all troubles among his neighbors. No one knew him but to honor and love. All friends, no enemies. No short and imperfect tribute to his memory can do justice to so good and great a man. We mourn his loss and sympathize tenderly with his bereaved family. Amid that great, sorrowful host of friends who gathered around his bier to render their last sad duty - "earth to earth" - not one of them felt but his spirit had winged its flight to the "Father" he loved and worshipped. Let us cultivate his virtues, imitate his example, and believe that an "honest 'Christian' man is the noblest work of God!'" B."

Died in Christian county Ky., near Longview, at the residence of her father, Mrs. Emma Garnett, daughter of John R. and Sicily H. Whitlock, and wife of J. F. Garnett.
She was born Sept. 11th, 1850, was of delicate constitution, but of untiring energy and industry and was warmly attached to her aged parents.
"She professed faith in Christ while at school, and united with the Baptist Church at Hopkinsville. Subsequently, she, with her husband moved their membership to the Baptist Church at Salem, of which church she was a zealous and consistent member at her death.
She was kind and generous to all, especially to the poor and needy and had endeared herself to a host of friends. Married in her 18th year she was a kind and affectionate wife, a fond watchful mother. She leaves three little boys - the youngest 5 months old, and a bereaved heart-broken husband, who loved her very tenderly, to mourn her loss.
Having an ardent, temperament, a cheerful disposition, she often spoke of the bright future before her, was in the prime of life and the stay of her aged parents, but it has pleased her Maker "who death all things well" to take her home to him very suddenly, without any premonition, and oh may this be a warning heeded by her family and friends, and may they be also ready when the hour cometh that there may be a perfect reunion of hearts which blossom eternally together in Paradise."

7th Generation:

John Robert Whitlock (Jr.) was born on February 26, 1822 in Christian Co., Kentucky 3,5. He died on May 24, 1901 in Longview Pct., Christian Co., Kentucky 3. He is buried in the Flat Lick Cemetery, near Herndon, Christian Co., Kentucky.

Father: John Robert Whitlock
Mother: Elizabeth Radford

John was born and raised in southern Christian County, Kentucky. It seems that he often went by his middle name Robert, likely to differentiate himself from his father. In 1850, he was living with his brother William in Christian County, Kentucky, where they were both described as merchants (it is unknown what their business was or what they sold). It was while living in this situation that John became familiar with and was engaged to Lucretia Parrish, the younger sister of his brother William's wife. John and Lucretia Parrish were married in 1852 (their license was issued on February 7, 1852 and the date of the actual marriage was never returned to the county).

In January 1853, their first child was born in Cadiz in nearby Trigg County, Kentucky; although they were apparently not living there. They settled in southern Christian County, Kentucky, where they lived for the duration of their lives. Between November 1853 and June 1855, a John R. Whitlock was postmaster of Oak Grove, Kentucky; it is unknown if this refers to him or his father. Aside from his stint as a merchant with his brother, John worked as a farmer for the majority of his life. The land that they lived on is apparently now within the city limits of Oak Grove, Kentucky (which was deeded to them by his father-in-law David Parrish). Although they had six children, only two of them survived to adulthood. In 1893, John deeded all of his real estate to his two daughters. After this, their daughter Lee and her husband and children lived with John and his wife until their deaths.

They moved to Nashville, Tennessee sometime between 1900 and 1910. They moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma sometime between 1910 and 1920. In 1930, they were outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

6 Lee Parrish Whitlock

8th Generation:

Lee Parrish Whitlock was born on August 14, 1869 in southern Christian County, Kentucky 1. She died on March 23, 1919 in Gordonfield Pct., Christian Co., Kentucky 1. She is buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Hopkinsville, Christian Co., Kentucky.
Father: John Robert Whitlock
Mother: Lucretia Parrish

Lee was born and raised in southern Christian County, Kentucky; where she lived on land that was originally purchased by her maternal grandfather in 1833. She was married at her parents' home on June 8, 1892, to Thomas Jones. After the marriage, they lived for one year near Thomas' family in neighboring Montgomery County, Tennessee. In June 1893, they moved back to Christian County, Kentucky and remained there. That same month, Lee's father deeded her 205 acres of his land. Lee and her husband lived with her parents in their farmhouse. Together Lee and Thomas had 3 children: Louetha and Bertha, and a son who died in infancy.

After Lee's parents died, she and her husband continued operation of their farm. Sadly, their house burned down in January 1906; but they rebuilt at the same location. The location of their home is a community that has had many different names over the years, including Longview, Kennedy, Oak Grove, Gordonfield and Edgoten. Today it is within the city limits of Oak Grove, and very close to the border with Montgomery County, Tennessee. Lee died there on March 23, 1919, from a battle with influenza. Not long after her death, her husband remarried and the rest of her family sold the family farm.

Obituary, Kentucky New Era [Hopkinsville, KY], Mar. 24, 1919, Pg. 1:
"DIED AFTER ILLNESS OF INFLUENZA

Mrs. T. A. Jones, of Edgoten, died Sunday evening about 6 o'clock, of a complication of diseases following an attack of influenza. She was first taken ill about four weeks ago but as complications developed her condition grew worse.
Mrs. Jones was forty-nine years of age and a native of this county. Before her marriage she was Miss Lee Whitlock. She was a most estimable lady and her death is mourned by a large circle of friends and relatives. She was a member of the Christian church and faithful to its teachings and her profession of faith.
She is survived by her husband, one of the leading citizens of the Edgoten vicinity, and two daughters, Mrs. Lucien Cayce of this city and Miss Louetha Jones, who is now a trained nurse at St. Thomas hospital in Nashville. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Everett S. Smith, of this city, were held at the home today at 1 o'clock and the body was brought here and interred in Riverside cemetery."

Lee married Thomas Anthony Jones on June 8, 1892 in Kennedy, Christian Co., Kentucky 2.
