Wheless Surname

1st Generation:

Joseph Wheless was born on November 12, 1760 in Halifax Co., North Carolina 1. He died on March 20, 1844 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 5.

Joseph was born and raised in Halifax County, North Carolina. He was most likely the grandson of Joseph Wheless of Halifax County, North Carolina who died there in 1761. My guess is that this Joseph's father was either John Wheless or James Wheless, who were both sons of Joseph.

Joseph served in the American Revolution while living in Halifax County, North Carolina. While there, he married Ann "Nancy" Council, sometime before December 1786. In 1802, they moved away from Halifax County, North Carolina 1. Between 1802 and 1805 they apparently lived somewhere in Tennessee. In 1805, they moved to Montgomery County, Tennessee 1, where they remained. They first purchased land in Montgomery County in August 1806. Joseph wrote his will on April 7, 1843 and it was proven on July 1, 1844.

He married Ann "Nancy" Council circa 1785 in North Carolina. She was born circa 1760, probably in Southampton Co., Virginia*. She died circa 1835 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee.
Father: Nathan Council
Mother: Mary (possibly Bunn)

* In 1756, Ann's parents probably moved from Isle of Wight County, Virginia to Southampton County, Virginia. Then during the 1760s (sometime between 1760 and 1767), they moved to Halifax County, North Carolina; where they remained. Since we don't know when Ann was born, she could have been born in any of these locations.

They had the following children:

1 Herbert Wheless was born circa 1788 in Halifax Co., North Carolina. He probably died between 1829 and 1830 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee.
He married Penelope Norris on September 12, 1808 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 2. She died after 1830.
They had the following children:
Winney Wheless (c. 1810-1859)
md. Adkins Perdew
Matilda Wheless (c. 1812-1897)
md. George W. Garrison
Joseph Wheless (c. 1812-1865)
md. 1st Seilinira W. Perdew
md. 2nd Nellie Cocke
Henry Wheless (1810s-1846)

Herbert died sometime between September 1829, when he sold land in Montgomery County, Tennessee, and June 1830, when his wife Penelope was enumerated as head of household in the 1830 census.

2 Mary Wheless
3 Jane Wheless was born circa 1793 in Halifax Co., North Carolina. She possibly died between 1843 and 1844.
She married ??? Holt.
It is not known if they had any children.

There is not much known about her. She was likely a female aged 0-10 enumerated with her family in the 1800 census, and then was absent from the 1820 census; suggesting she had married and moved out by that time. She was named in her father's will of April 7, 1843 as "Jane Holt". Then in May 1844, she was not described as a surviving child of her father when his death was recorded in court. Joseph Wheless' will also describes a "William Holt", leaving most researchers to assume that William was her husband. There certainly was a William Holt who lived in Montgomery County, Tennessee during that time period and of the right age to have been her husband, but his relationship was not actually described. However census records do not seem to indicate that he had a wife that was near her age. An alternate theory was that Jane was instead married to a different Holt, probably a relative of William. One possibility is William's brother George Holt, who died in or before 1831 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee. George's brother William was the administrator of his estate and the guardian of his children. That could explain why William Holt was named in Joseph Wheless' will but not described as a son-in-law. In addition, Aquilla Wheless and Zachariah Grant (married to Mary Wheless) were both involved with the administration of George Holt's estate and/or the guardianship of his children. Although records don't describe the name of George's wife/widow, clues from other records suggest her name was Hannah. Perhaps Jane was married to yet another Holt, and William Holt in her father's will was a son?

4 Aquilla Wheless was born circa 1795 in Halifax Co., North Carolina. He died on July 22, 1846 6 or July 23, 1846 7 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee .
He married Mary "Polly" Hogan on July 6, 1820 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 7. She was born on March 6, 1800 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 7 and died on September 2, 1845 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 7.
They had the following children:
Martha Ann Wheless (c. 1821-1845)
md. John Wilson
Wesley Wheless (1823-1861)
md. Susan Ann Hobson
Alexander Wheless (1825-1871)
md. Elizabeth Tucker Malone
James Wheless (1828-1886)
md. Sarah "Sally" B. Ewing

Clarksville Jeffersonian, Aug. 1, 1846, Pg. 3:

2nd Generation:

Mary Wheless was born on November 4, 1789 3 or November 7, 1789 4 in Halifax Co., North Carolina . She died on June 30, 1858 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 3,4. She is buried in the Old Grant's Chapel Cemetery, Montgomery Co., Tennessee.

Father: Joseph Wheless
Mother: Ann "Nancy" Council

Mary moved with her family to Montgomery Co., Tennessee in about 1805, when she was about 15. She joined the Baptist church in October 1804.

Clarksville Chronicle, Jul. 23, 1858, Pg. 2:
“OBITUARY.
Died, on the 30th of June, 1858, Mrs. Mary Grant, consort of Zachariah Grant, aged 68 years, 7 months and 26 days. Sister Grant was the daughter of Mr. Wheless, who died in this county some years since. She was born Nov. 7th, 1789; professed religion the first Sabbath in October, 1804, in her 50th (sic) year, and joined the Baptist church; married Mr. Grant the 27th of December, 1810, with whom she lived in peace and prosperity. She possessed a strong mind, fixed purpose, and amiable disposition; was kind and liberal in her feelings, a friend to the poor, very attentive to the sick, and ever ready, with a liberal hand, to aid in anything that promised good to the church or the world. She was much afflicted for eighteen months previous to her death, the last six months confined to her room, and the last four weeks to her bed. She bore her sufferings with christian fortitude and without murmuring, giving the strongest evidence of submission to the will of her Heavenly Father During her affliction she often talked of her future prospects, saying her confidence was in God, and she had neither doubt nor fear as to her acceptance with him through Jesus Christ, her Savior. As she approached near the tomb her mind was more and more taken from the world, and the greater did she manifest her anxiety for the spiritual interest of her friends. She urged her aged companion to meet her in heaven - which he promised he would - and her children, grand-children and servants, that were not religious, to seek religious, and that they were, to review their covenant with God and live more for him.
Sister Grant lived the life of the Christian and died giving the assurance that she had the victory through Jesus Christ. She was a kind neighbor, an affectionate wife, a tender and loving mother. Her death has made a void in the family that time cannot fill. She left a kind husband, three sons and three daughters with their families, and a number of other relations and friends, to mourn her loss. Her request was that they would not grieve for her. May they so live that when they come to die, they may feel that all is well, as she did, and die in great peace. A friend. Montgomery Co., July, 1858.”

She married Zachariah Grant on December 27, 1810 in Montgomery Co., Tennessee 4.
